Buth (Leo de Budt (1919-2010) - Masker

Acrylic and mixed media on canvas

Belgian artist Leo De Budt (1925–2009), known as Buth, moved between the worlds of comic art and modern painting. Trained at the Sint-Lucas Institute in Ghent, he was a contemporary of Pierre Alechinsky, Bram Bogart and Serge Vandercam, sharing their interest in material transformation and expressive gesture.

In Mask (Masker), De Budt explores identity and concealment through a dense interplay of colour and texture. The mask becomes both presence and absence — a surface that hides and reveals. The work captures Buth’s shift from narrative drawing toward a deeply tactile, psychological abstraction.
