Jeanne Opgenhaffen – Untitled (Zoomorphic Figure)

Ceramic,  in perspex vitrine

This small ceramic creature by Jeanne Opgenhaffen exudes charm, wit, and character. With its rounded body, gleaming eyes, and exaggerated limbs, it hovers between frog, dog, and mythic hybrid — a humorous reflection of nature’s inventiveness. The cracked surface and layered glaze reveal the artist’s tactile process, transforming imperfection into vitality. Presented like a precious curiosity, the figure does not aspire to monumentality but to intimacy: it invites the viewer to smile, to pause, and to rediscover wonder.

About the artist

Jeanne Opgenhaffen (born 1940, Zonhoven, Belgium) is an internationally acclaimed ceramic artist celebrated for her mastery of porcelain and her innovative sculptural vision. A graduate of the LUCA School of Arts in Hasselt, where she later taught, Opgenhaffen redefined ceramics as a medium of rhythm, light, and movement. Her work bridges structure and spontaneity — from meticulously composed porcelain reliefs to playful, organic forms such as this zoomorphic figure.

Over the course of her career, Opgenhaffen has exhibited widely across Europe, Japan, and the United States. Her work is represented in major public and private collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum (London) and the Musée Ariana (Geneva). In each of her creations, the discipline of craft meets the poetry of imagination — revealing the profound expressive power of clay.
