Marnix Hoys – Untitled (Ceramic Sculpture)

The life of Marnix Hoys is profoundly intertwined with ceramics. For decades he led the ceramics studio at Sint-Lucas Ghent, where he had once studied in the 1960s, shaping generations of artists while helping define the modern history of sculptural ceramics in Belgium.

His work reveals a lifelong fascination with the human figure and its dialogue with nature — themes that remain at the core of his artistic identity. Equally defining is his deep curiosity for the technical mastery of the craft, which continues to lead him to Japan for further study. From Japanese culture he distills symbolic elements that lend his sculptures their quiet strength and poetic resonance.

In this piece, Hoys turns clay into a meditation on form and impermanence. Every surface carries the memory of process — touch, fire, transformation — until the material itself becomes metaphor. His ceramics speak of balance, devotion, and the timeless gesture of shaping earth into spirit.
